Being quest at designer's house in Chicago

It has been such a treat this winter to visit my good friend Abigail, a designer in Chicago at her beautiful gray stone from 1906. Located on a historical boulevard in Palmer Square, she has spent the last year transforming it into a cozy, distinctive refuge.
A combination of her diverse sense of style, artwork, lighting and collectibles from her many travels make the house precious. Contemporary lighting is mixed with unexpected styles of modern that all play well with the traditional architecture. Japanese craft, Native American sculpture, local artist's paintings and family heirlooms all have meaningful stories in how they came to be part of the fabric of her very personal space.
A creative reverse use of the living room and dining room areas allows for a unique arrangement of her eclectic furniture anchored by the original built-in buffet which serves as a natural gathering spot in the center of the house. The deep righ grey Farrow & Ball paint of the dining room perfectly sets of the original woodwork, a stunning gold Terzani G.R.A suspension light, a white marble bust and the bright vivid paintings of Kim M.Pruitt.
As an avid cook and fan of Japanese cooking, her kitchen preparation area is artful and functional all at once. A unique mosaic of serving pieces, hand-made ceramics, Japanese cookware and an army of sleek glassware uniformly ready to serve at her many delightful dinner parties. It is completely utilitarian and yet as pleasing to the eye.
The cozy office with beautiful mid-century writing desk is artfully transformed into a swanky bar which is a perfect use of space when entertaining.
Even the smallest of rooms and spaces have received attention to design detail. A local artist has been commissioned to paint an art-deco mural that extends 3 floors of the rear staircase. With the help of her partner Bohdan, the pantry has a sense of style with a unique spice rack design and custom storage system executed with a complete sense of space and function.
Just like her inviting home, the many faces af Abigail's life well-lived and her caring ways are why I call her my best friend.
